About Juana de la Zarate

Juana (Joan) Ortiz de Zarate of Corrientes was appointed Adelantada of Chile by Emperor Charles V after the death of her father, Juan Ortiz de Zárate, Adelanto and Governor, founder of the Cities of Sant Fe and Buenos Aires. She inherited the estates of the family. Her father died in 1576 and left his inheritance to anyone who married his daughter "naturally". Don Juan de Haray was entrusted wuth the execution of the will.

There were many pretenders to the fortune, title, and hand of Dona Juana Ortiz, including the viceroy of Peru, Don Farancisco de Toledo.  However, against all odds, Don Juan de Haray chose Juan de Vera of Aragón Tower for her husband.  She was married to Juan de Torres de Vera y Aragón in 1578 when he then became Governor and the fourth and final head of these lands. He founed the beutiful city of Corrientes in Argentina on April3, 1588.

Juana Ortiz was the mother of Juan Alonso de Vera y Zárate. Her mother was the Inca Princess, Leonor Yupanqui, daughter of Tupac-Hupalla (originally Auqui Huallpa Tupac) puppet-emperor in 1533.
